FOSS is here in LK

Today, Anuradha slashdotted the news on Open Source Week in Sri Lanka. This is fantastic news for the Open Source Software users and promoters in Sri Lanka. http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/08/28/1553234

Over the last few years the government’s interest for this kind of community based software was not noticeable. Infect they never evaluated Open Source software as an option for their high cost proprietary software used in various departments. Very first question they always asked is ‘who is going to support?’ Even LKLUG had no answer. Only the private organization and universities -who really knew about the power of open source software- used them without any fear.

Now thing are changing, companies that provide supports are establishing their name in LK. RedHat, Suse to name few. LK LUG and other individuals were able to make aware and push ICTA towards FOSS, as a result, now Government and ICTA is openly promoting FOSS. So finally as a collective result of all Government, ICTA, LK LUG & LSF we are going to face to the biggest event that is happening after the tsunami in Sri Lanka - FOSSSL.

Although many comments on ‘/.’ are hurting, the effort of FOSS people here is greatly appreciated by the IT community in LK. They should really be proved of the work they have done.
